If You Don't Take The Medicine, Don't Blame The Doctor or The Medicine | ISV | 29 Aug 2026

Prabhupāda writes that it's by one's determination and effort that one can perfect one's japa, which means that we have to take responsibility. There is a phenomenon in medicine that I read about recently and wrote something about. One of the main reasons that people aren't cured of certain ailments is because of noncompliance in taking the medicine: they either stop too early, and then it comes back, or they don't take it at all. In a similar way, japa is medicinal and has to be taken.

So, just as one has to take responsibility—although a doctor gives medicine and says, "Take it," you have to be responsible about when you take it and making sure that you finish it; otherwise, the doctor can't help, as we have to help ourselves—existentially, we have to accept also that we're fallen. However we fell, that's a whole another issue that will never be resolved from this plane of consciousness. But in every śāstra and every utterance of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, He says we've fallen, and from a position of being fallen, we need a remedy. We need help.

Japa is the ultimate expression of "I need help," and of taking responsibility for getting that help, because we have to personally do it. We have to meditate on the name. We have to chant the name with vigor and also sincerity, and that requires organizing one's life and collecting one's determination to achieve it.
