Controlling The Mind Takes Practice | Japa Jolt | HG Vaisesika Dasa | 26 Aug 2026

Reflection by participant: I was realizing it's a lot easier to chant when the mind is not straying away, because it's a lot harder to chant when you're distracted, and it's almost like doing that makes the whole process harder. So it's in your benefit to stay focused. And I tried doing that a lot more today.

Comments by HG Vaisesika Dasa:

That's such an excellent point, and it's one that comes up in all of the śāstras about controlling the mind. A couple of thoughts I have on that: it takes a lot of practice throughout the day. We might note our habits throughout the day and where the mind's going, because it makes a difference if you're constantly keeping your mind under control throughout the day. One of the places a lot of people lose control of their mind—and they don't even know it—is on the phone. Because everything's packed into one little screen, and then you can get pulled in many different directions, and get into a 'no benefit' zone where the mind's becoming weak.

And if you have a replacement for that—for instance, you can keep something that can engage your mind in doing something productive—like what I've been doing is I have printed on cardstock a series of things that I keep my mind busy with wherever I go. For instance, I've been memorizing this poem that Śrīla Prabhupāda wrote:

Adore, adore ye all, the happy day,

Blessed in heaven, sweeter than May,

When he appeared at Purī, the holy place,

My Lord and Master's divine grace.

This is my screen. So, very minimal connection with the phone, and then have something to replace it where you're actively engaging your mind. You'll find that your mind gets stronger, and you'll also be able to chant japa better.
