Psalm 91 gives us a beautiful picture of what it means to live close to God. After hearing Psalm 88 last week, one of the darkest psalms, Psalm 91 reminds us that no matter how much heat, pressure, or uncertainty we face, we can find rest under the shadow of the Almighty.
The psalm begins not with what God will do, but with where we choose to live:
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” (Psalm 91:1)
To dwell means to remain, to stay, to make our home in God’s presence. It is not only turning to God in a crisis, but walking with Him daily through prayer, worship, and His Word. As Charles Spurgeon said: “The shadow of God is not the occasional resort, but the constant abiding place of the saint.”
Book 4 of Psalms (Psalms 90–106) repeatedly turns our attention away from our circumstances and back to who God is: eternal, sovereign, and faithful. Moses declared in Psalm 90:2: “From everlasting to everlasting you are God.”
Because God is greater than our circumstances, we can rest under His shadow.
1. Under His shadow we find protection
Psalm 91:3–4 says: “Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”
God is our protector. We can bring our fears to Him instead of carrying them alone. He sees dangers we cannot see and protects us from hidden traps. Our security is not based on our strength, but on His faithfulness.
Psalm 77:11–12 says: “I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.”
Remembering God’s faithfulness strengthens our trust in Him.
2. Under His shadow we find peace
Psalm 91:5–6 says:
“You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day.”
Some fears are visible and some are hidden, but God’s peace is available in every situation. Jesus said:
“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
The disciples saw Jesus sleeping during a storm because He knew His Father was in control. In the same way, we do not need to wait for circumstances to improve before experiencing peace. We can know God’s presence even in the middle of uncertainty.
3. Under His shadow we find rest in His power
Psalm 91:14–16 says: “I will rescue him; I will protect him… I will be with him in trouble.”
Our confidence is not in our ability, but in God’s power. Throughout history, believers have turned to Psalm 91 in times of danger, sickness, and uncertainty because it points us to a God who rescues, protects, and saves.
Ultimately, this psalm points us to Jesus. Through His death and resurrection, He defeated our greatest enemies: sin and death.
Romans 8:37 says: “We are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”
Whatever we face, God remains our refuge. Our problems may be bigger than us, but they are not bigger than God.
Application
Make God your dwelling place. Spend time in His presence daily. Bring your fears, worries, and burdens to Him. Stay under His shadow and learn to rest under His authority.
“The Lord is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” (Psalm 91:2)
