In 1612, a chance encounter on a lonely Lancashire road would help trigger one of the most infamous witch trials in English history.
When travelling pedlar John Law collapsed shortly after being cursed by a young woman named Alizon Device, suspicion quickly spread through the communities around Pendle Hill. Accusations followed. Families turned on one another. A child gave evidence against her own mother. And within months, ten people would be sent to the gallows for witchcraft.
In this episode of The Haunted History Club, we travel back to Jacobean England to uncover the true story of the Pendle witches — the fear, superstition and accusations that transformed one strange incident into a deadly prosecution.
