A young woman is taken from her London bedroom in the dead of night.
Her crime?
She heard something she was never supposed to hear.
Locked inside a secluded asylum controlled by the sinister Dr Silas Crowe, Eleanor Harcourt discovers that many of its patients are not insane at all. They are people the powerful would rather forget.
When her husband Edward returns from military service and begins searching for her, he is drawn into a hidden world of secret societies, forced confinement and a doctor who believes he has been chosen by God to purge sin from the human body.
But inside St Bartholomew’s, something far darker than imprisonment is waiting.
