What if disappointing someone doesn't mean you've done something wrong?

In Episode 7 of The Way Back to You, I explore the difficult but important distinction between disappointing someone and betraying someone.

Through personal stories from leadership, cultural transitions, coaching and relationships, I reflect on why so many of us feel responsible for other people's emotions and how the fear of disappointment can quietly lead us away from ourselves.

I explore the desire to be understood, the need to explain our intentions, the challenge of making unpopular decisions and the courage required to remain true to ourselves when others may not agree.

Reflection questions:

• Whose disappointment are you working hardest to avoid?

• What are you afraid their disappointment will say about you?

• Are you explaining to communicate or explaining to gain approval?

• Can you disappoint someone without betraying them?

• Where are you disappointing yourself to avoid disappointing others?

The goal is not to stop caring.

The goal is to care without making other people's disappointment the authority over your decisions.
