Episode 12: Natalee Holloway — The Vacation She Never Came Home From

📬 The Postcard Thought

Growing up means giving our kids the freedom to explore without us. The hard part is making sure we've prepared them for the moments when we're no longer there to make the decisions.

Episode Description

It was supposed to be a celebration.

In May 2005, 18-year-old Natalee Holloway traveled to Aruba with more than 100 classmates and adult chaperones from Mountain Brook High School in Alabama. They had graduated days earlier, and the Caribbean trip was meant to mark the end of one chapter before everyone went their separate ways.

Natalee never made it home.

On the final night of the trip, she left Carlos'n Charlie's nightclub with three young men. When her classmates gathered the following morning to leave for the airport, Natalee wasn't there.

Her luggage was still in her hotel room.

Her passport was still there.

But Natalee was gone.

What followed became one of the most widely covered missing-person cases of the early 2000s: massive searches, international media attention, arrests and releases, conflicting accounts, years of investigation, and a mother who refused to stop looking for answers.

For nearly two decades, the central question remained unanswered.

Then, in 2023, the case took an extraordinary turn.

Joran van der Sloot—the man long connected to the investigation into Natalee's disappearance—admitted in a U.S. federal court proceeding that he killed her.

In this episode of The Last Postcard with Dominique Ortiz, we return to Aruba in 2005 and follow Natalee's final known night, the investigation that followed, and the developments that eventually changed what we know about her disappearance.

But this story also brings us back to a conversation we've had before on this show:

How do we prepare young people for independence without teaching them to fear it?

Because Natalee was doing something millions of young adults eventually do.

She was beginning to experience the world without her parents standing beside her.

And that's exactly why this story is worth talking about.

Travel Tip Takeaway

Know enough about your own trip that you could take over if you had to.

Don't let one friend be the only person who knows where you're staying, how you're getting back, who you're with, or what the plan is.

Know your hotel.

Know your transportation.

Keep your own identification and essential information accessible.

And make sure someone outside your immediate group knows where you're supposed to be.

Independence isn't knowing how to handle everything alone.

It's knowing enough to make the next decision when the plan changes.
