Episode 10: Lost in the Amazon — Yossi Ghinsberg’s Fight to Survive

📬 The Postcard Thought

Sometimes adventure begins with saying yes. Survival begins when you realize you may have trusted the wrong yes.

Episode Description

In 1981, 22-year-old Yossi Ghinsberg was traveling through South America looking for adventure.

In Bolivia, he met a man who told him about something almost impossible to resist: a journey deep into the Amazon rainforest, toward a remote Indigenous community and the possibility of discovering places few outsiders had ever seen.

Yossi said yes.

Joined by fellow travelers Kevin Gale and Marcus Stamm, the group followed their new guide, Karl Ruprechter, into the Bolivian jungle.

But as the journey became more difficult, tensions grew. Questions about their guide began to surface. And eventually, the four men split into two groups.

Yossi and Kevin continued downriver on a homemade raft.

Then came the rapids.

In a matter of moments, the two friends were separated—and Yossi found himself completely alone in the Amazon.

For weeks, he battled hunger, injuries, insects, flooding, exhaustion, hallucinations, and the terrifying possibility that no one would ever find him.

In this episode of The Last Postcard with Dominique Ortiz, we follow the decisions that brought Yossi into the jungle, the friendship that ultimately helped bring him home, and the extraordinary mental battle that unfolded while he was alone.

But Yossi's story also raises a question that applies far beyond the Amazon:

How do we balance the part of us that wants to say yes to adventure with the part that needs to stop and ask a few more questions first?

Because curiosity can lead us to extraordinary places.

But curiosity still needs a plan.

Travel Tip Takeaway

Adventure doesn't require blind trust.

Before following someone into a remote environment, verify who they are, understand exactly where you're going, know how you're getting back, and make sure someone outside your group has your plans.

A compelling story from a charismatic stranger isn't a substitute for credentials, a route, emergency communication, or an exit plan.

You can be spontaneous and still ask questions.
