Dorothy L. Sayers’ The Zeal of Thy House takes us into the rebuilding of Canterbury Cathedral in the twelfth century and the story of William of Sens, the brilliant architect called to restore the cathedral after a devastating fire.
But Sayers is interested in far more than architecture.
This is a drama about vocation, craftsmanship, pride, beauty, sacrifice—and the dangerous temptation to believe that the thing we create belongs entirely to us.
William is a master builder who knows his gifts. He also knows the cathedral rising beneath his direction may outlast kings, bishops, and perhaps even his own name. Somewhere between the desire to make something beautiful and the desire to possess that beauty lies the spiritual struggle at the heart of Sayers’ play.
