The Night They Deliver the Money | R.D. Wingfield | BBC Radio Thriller

Dela

It should have been a routine night at the bank.

A large consignment of money is due to arrive, and manager Mr. Robbins has procedures to follow, forms to complete, and rules intended to make sure nothing goes wrong.

Then four men arrive claiming to be auditors.

Head Office says it sent no auditors.

Then the telephone goes dead.

And the money is still coming.

R. D. Wingfield’s The Night They Deliver the Money is a wonderfully constructed BBC radio thriller in which an ordinary workplace slowly becomes something much more sinister. Best known today as the creator of Inspector Frost, Wingfield had a remarkable talent for mixing suspense with dry humor, eccentric characters, and the absurdities of people trying to follow procedure when the situation has gone completely off the rails.

Originally broadcast by the BBC on April 4, 1970, the play stars Lockwood West as the increasingly beleaguered Robbins, with Andrew Sachs among an excellent cast.

Turn down the lights.

The auditors have arrived.

And somewhere out there, the money is on its way.
