Scott Wolter believes one of the biggest historical discoveries in America has been sitting in plain sight for more than a century.

At the centre of the argument is the Kensington Runestone: a 202-pound stone carrying a runic inscription dated 1362. Wolter says his forensic geological work convinced him the inscription could not be a nineteenth-century fake. From there, the trail led toward the Knights Templar, medieval voyages across the Atlantic, the Newport Tower, mysterious runestones and an alternative history of the settlement of North America.

If Wolter is right, Columbus did not discover an unknown continent. He arrived in a world Europeans already knew existed.

And that raises a much more dangerous question: how much of the story was forgotten — and how much was deliberately pushed aside?
