THE WORLD THAT NEEDED HIM
Something changed in Western democratic politics over the past two to three decades.
Blair's New Labor is not Wilson's Labor. Clinton's Democrats are not Roosevelt's Democrats. Then came Citizens United and with it a flood of money and even greater corrosion of democratic politics.
And then something even more revealing happened.
In 2012, Barack Obama won re-election on hope and change. In 2016, roughly one in eight Trump voters, between seven and nine million people, had voted for Obama four years earlier.
That is not contradiction. That is the same wound voting twice.
Each disappointment priming the next surrender. Each failure making the soma more appealing.
Curtis Yarvin's philosophy is the third expression of that wound at the philosophical level. Not a vote for a person. A vote for a different kind of system entirely. The logical conclusion of two consecutive failed bets on the existing one.
For nearly two decades he wrote under a pseudonym, Mencius Moldbug, arguing that democracy is a failed experiment that should be replaced by a CEO monarch. No elections. No independent civil service. No press the monarch can't remove.
Almost no one read his blog. Then Peter Thiel read it. Then JD Vance. Then Elon Musk and Marc Andreessen.
In January 2025, Curtis Yarvin was a guest of honor at Donald Trump's Coronation Ball.
The pseudonymous blogger is now in the room where power is exercised.
That isn't a coincidence. That is the mechanism arriving at its destination.
THE SOMA
Yarvin's offer isn't primarily intellectual. It's emotional. And it lands on one of the most legitimate emotions available right now.
Exhaustion.
And what he offers in response to that exhaustion is more sophisticated than anything Aldous Huxley imagined in 1932 when he named it soma in Brave New World. A gram is better than a damn.

The twelve-year-old who couldn't meet the peer criteria grew up. And built something.
Yarvin grew up moving. Portugal. Cyprus. Dominican Republic. Serial displacement. Serial belonging failures. In Cyprus he was three grades ahead of his peers. When he returned to the US he described himself as a twelve-year-old sophomore and described that twelve-year-old, in his own words, as "a little arrogant asshole."
The formal systems rewarded his intelligence. The peer systems did not.
