JD Vance documented his own wound. In his own words. In a book most people misread.
Then he did exactly what the unexamined wound required.
Four name changes. James Donald Bowman. James Donald Hamel. JD Hamel. JD Vance. Four attempts to become someone the available container would accept. Four masks over the same face.
THE OPENING
It's 1988. Australia. Dov Baron is in a car, preparing to leave another place he'd hoped would be home, convincing himself he's an explorer looking for his next adventure.
He had no idea he was still running from something he hadn't yet named.
Then Tracy Chapman comes through the radio.
One woman. One guitar. A voice that isn't reaching for anything. Just telling the truth about what happens when you find a fast car, believe it's the ticket out, drive as far and as fast as it will go, and arrive in the same town.
Because the thing you were running from wasn't behind you.
It was inside you.THE PERSONAL PARALLEL
Dov doesn't examine Vance from a distance.
He got married at sixteen because he desperately wanted somewhere to belong and mistook the first available container for the real thing. He did the therapy, the personal development, four hours of meditation a day, built businesses, layer after layer of spackle over the original wound.
Until he fell a hundred and twenty feet while free climbing.
He didn't land on his face. He landed on his ego.
True transformation is not a new layer of spackle. It's full demolition. The phoenix can only rise from the flames when every false image has burned away. The contents have to spill out to make room for the soul.
The distinction between fitting in and belonging isn't a concept. It's something earned at the bottom of a hundred and twenty-foot fall.
THE QUESTION TO CARRY
Tracy Chapman ends Fast Car by finally naming the truth. The car was never the answer. The town they were trying to leave was always inside them.
And knowing without acting is its own kind of wound.
What's the fast car you've been driving that's taking you further from yourself rather than closer?
