Discover Why Water Pumps Sound Like Gravel Cavitation NPSH

A centrifugal pump that sounds like it is pumping gravel is usually cavitating. Low pressure at the impeller eye boils the water into vapor bubbles. Those bubbles collapse in the higher pressure zone and hammer the metal. That happens when the suction head available is less than the head the pump needs. Hot water, a high lift, a small suction line, or a clogged strainer can start it. The impeller pits, flow drops, and the pressure gauge jumps.
