If you already know — or strongly suspect — you've been exposed to mould, the next question is the one that actually matters: how do you treat mould exposure and get yourself feeling well again? In this episode I sit down with Bec Clarke, a clinical nutritionist who specialises in mould and mycotoxin illness, and who went through eight years of it herself before she worked out what was actually going on and how to treat it properly.

Bec walks me through what mould does inside the body once it's there — why it triggers such a strong inflammatory response, how it gets through the blood-brain barrier, and why some people get properly sick from it while others in the same house feel fine. We get into the specific symptoms that are genuinely a signal for mould exposure (not just generic tiredness), the surprising places you can be exposed beyond your own home, and the testing Bec actually recommends — including a $15 screening test originally built for NASA.

Then we get into the part most people skip: the actual order of operations for getting better. Because — as Bec puts it — you can't supplement your way out of a mouldy house, any more than you can medicate a fish in dirty water. If you listened to last week's episode with Tracey on how to find mould in your home, this is what comes next.

S5 — What You'll Learn

  • Why mould and mycotoxins trigger such a strong, systemic inflammatory response — and why some people react far more severely than others
  • The specific symptoms — electric shocks, spinal vibrations, ice-pick pain — that point directly to mould exposure rather than something else
  • How mould exposure is linked to ADHD, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and other neuropsychiatric presentations in both kids and adults
  • The surprising places you can be exposed to mould and mycotoxins outside your home — including coffee, peanuts, cars, schools and hospitals
  • Why remediation and removal always come before supplements — and the testing Bec recommends to work out where you're at
