Before the French Revolution, before Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations, a Finnish-Swedish priest and politician named Anders Chydenius was already arguing for free trade, freedom of the press, and the rights of the common people. His pamphlet 'The National Gain', published in 1765, laid out a radical vision of economic liberty that anticipated Adam Smith by over a decade. Chydenius also championed the Freedom of the Press Act of 1766, the world's first law guaranteeing press freedom and public access to official documents. We follow his political career during the Age of Liberty, his clashes with the Hat party, and his later advocacy for religious tolerance and the rights of the Sami people.
