While Sweden is often remembered for its military empire in the seventeenth century or its modern welfare state, the late eighteenth century offered a radically different chapter: the Gustavian era. This episode explores the reign of King Gustav III, a monarch who sought to transform Stockholm into a cultural beacon comparable to Paris and Vienna. We examine his ambitious projects, including the founding of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and the construction of the Royal Opera House, which remains an architectural landmark today. The narrative culminates in the infamous midnight at the Masked Ball in 1792, where the king was assassinated by disgruntled nobles within the very walls he built to celebrate culture.
