We often think of Istanbul’s history in terms of sultans, battles, and treaties, but the city’s survival has always depended on something less visible: water. In this episode, we explore the underground cisterns that kept Constantinople standing through centuries of siege. We look at how Justinian I built the Basilica Cistern to hold millions of gallons of fresh water, protecting the capital from blockade. Then we jump forward to see how Suleiman the Magnificent commissioned Mimar Sinan to create the larger Kasimpasa and Alemdar cisterns, expanding the network that fed a growing metropolis. We’ll discuss the engineering marvels of these hidden spaces, the role of the su bya (water bearer) in daily Ottoman life, and why the city’s aqueducts were just as vital as its walls. This is a story about infrastructure, survival, and the quiet power beneath the streets.
