In this episode, we look past the well-known sieges of 1099 and 1187 to examine a lesser-known but critical moment in Jerusalem’s history: the siege of 1520. After Sultan Selim I conquered the city from the Mamluks in 1517, he died unexpectedly, leaving his young son Suleiman on the throne. The new Sultan was delayed by rebellions in Anatolia, leaving Jerusalem under the harsh rule of the local governor, Iskender Pasha. When news of Selim's death reached the city, Iskender declared himself independent, cutting off supplies and besieging the populace. For months, the people of Jerusalem endured starvation and fear until Suleiman finally arrived with his army. We explore how the city’s leaders negotiated survival, the role of the Jewish community in maintaining order during the crisis, and how this event set the stage for Suleiman the Magnificent’s famous rebuilding of the walls you see today. This story highlights the fragility of power and the resilience of a city caught between empires.
