Four strangers come up the county road at midday carrying a white pillowcase tied to a walking stick, and they stop a quarter mile out and plant it and wait. Camp Ridge has been fed for one week. The road already knows.
The camp answers the flag with the only doctrine that survives contact with a collapsed county. Rifles laid on, gate shut, mercy operating inside armor. The parley happens at a plank table on ground picked for what it hides, the trade stock dressed down to dented cans and loose beans, and the vetting runs deep, because a trade contact is a person who now knows your gate, your faces, and your surplus. The strangers' answers hold. Their goods hold. And the thing their boy keeps checking the back trail for turns out to be holding too.
What follows prices the camp's new wealth in the county's own currency. Boot prints inside boot prints on a creek bank. A night visitor the dog reads and the glass never finds. And a trade that was supposed to cost cans and beans, interrupted by men who came up out of the dead ground believing they had caught a soft camp counting food in the open. The larder bought Camp Ridge a winter. This is the week the county opens negotiations on the price.
