The man walks up the middle of the county road with the enemy's radios two days dead all around him. One man, no flag, hands empty, standing in the open frost while a camp at maximum alert looks at him for as long as looking takes. Then he fixes the gate hinge before anybody asks him to, and every rifle on the wall understands the sales pitch without a word being spoken. A man who can fix things, in a county where everything is broken.

Camp Ridge runs the hardest vetting in its history and the stranger passes it. His story holds everywhere anybody can check it. His hands earn his keep twice over by the second day. Reilly argues that a camp under a running silence should admit nobody at all, and Calloway carries the admission anyway, because you do not shut the door when the county gets worse. The county getting worse is the whole reason the door matters.

It is Emily who stops smiling first. Told twice with three days between them, the man's story drifts. A town detail that moves. A trade term a shade too rehearsed. None of it proof, all of it ink in a survey book kept by a girl who counts everything, while the camp weighs a child's page against a hinge that no longer squeaks. The camp rebuilt its whole defense after the survey on the rise, and that rebuild is now the most valuable information in the county, and the county has already shown it would rather buy than bleed.
