In “The Luminous Shield,” a traveler visiting Constantinople loses her cherished spaniel, Ralph, and is persuaded to seek help from a group of dervishes reputed to possess clairvoyant powers. In a dark, dusty garret, their chief mesmerizes a strange oracle named Tatmos, whose body disappears within a radiant, sharply defined disk resembling a silver shield. Across its luminous surface appear vivid, silent visions of distant people and places, ultimately revealing Ralph wounded but alive in a ditch behind the Ministry of Finance. Further visions accurately show unopened letters and the traveler’s companion suffering an accident, proving that the spectacle is more than illusion. Following the shield’s guidance, the traveler finds Ralph precisely where the vision revealed him, transforming a simple search for a lost dog into an eerie demonstration of supernatural sight.
