In “From the Polar Lands,” Dr. Erkler recalls an extraordinary encounter during an 1878 expedition stranded for the winter on the frozen coast of Spitsbergen. Isolated beneath the endless polar night, with their ships trapped in ice and provisions running dangerously low, the explorers are astonished when fifty seal hunters emerge from the snowy wilderness beneath the Aurora Borealis. Their guide is Old Johan, a white-haired mariner who inexplicably knew the precise location of the hidden camp. The hunters reveal that Johan has been known to generations of their fathers and grandfathers, always appearing exactly as he does now and earning the name “the white-haired all-knower.” When questioned about his age and mysterious knowledge, Johan simply answers that he has never counted his years and knew the explorers were there because God guided him, leaving Erkler with an encounter that neither science nor reason can explain.
