Gerda Bormann was the wife of Martin Bormann, Adolf Hitler’s powerful private secretary, and a devoted supporter of National Socialism who raised ten children within one of the most influential families of the Third Reich.

Born Gerda Buch in 1909, she grew up surrounded by the Nazi movement. Her father, Walter Buch, was an early Nazi Party member and associate of Hitler, exposing Gerda from an early age to the ideology that would shape her adult life.

In 1929, she married Martin Bormann, an ambitious Nazi official who eventually became Hitler’s private secretary and one of the most powerful figures within the regime. As her husband’s influence increased, Gerda and their ten children enjoyed a privileged existence at Obersalzberg, the mountain complex surrounding Hitler’s Berghof in the Bavarian Alps.

Gerda enthusiastically embraced the Nazi ideal of motherhood and was awarded the Gold Cross of Honour of the German Mother for bearing ten children. Her surviving correspondence also reveals her commitment to National Socialist racial ideology, including strong antisemitic views and radical ideas concerning marriage, reproduction, and Germany’s demographic future.

This documentary explores Gerda Bormann’s marriage to Martin Bormann, family life within Hitler’s inner circle, and the influence of Nazi ideology on the Bormann household. It also follows the destruction of the world surrounding her in 1945, her flight from Obersalzberg into northern Italy, and her final months after the collapse of Nazi Germany.

Through letters, historical records, and eyewitness accounts, the film provides insight into a woman who enjoyed the privileges of proximity to Nazi power and remained committed to National Socialism until the regime’s final days.

This episode is part of the series Fascist Wives and Companions.
