Emanuel Moravec was a decorated Czechoslovak army officer and outspoken patriot who became one of the most notorious Czech Nazi collaborators during the Second World War. Once a fierce opponent of German expansion, he eventually served the occupation regime as a government minister and leading propagandist.
Born in Prague in 1893, Moravec served during the First World War and joined the Czechoslovak Legions. He later became a respected military thinker and strong advocate of national defence. In 1938, he fiercely opposed the Munich Agreement and urged President Edvard Beneš to resist Nazi Germany rather than surrender Czechoslovakia's border territories.
Yet following the German occupation of the Czech lands in March 1939, Moravec underwent a dramatic political transformation. The former patriot became an enthusiastic supporter of collaboration, using newspapers, public speeches, and radio broadcasts to promote loyalty to Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime.
His political influence grew under the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, particularly through his relationship with Reinhard Heydrich, one of the most powerful SS officials in Nazi Germany. In 1942, Moravec became Minister of Education and People's Enlightenment, gaining considerable influence over Czech education, culture, and propaganda.
He also led the Curatorium for the Education of Youth, an organisation intended to indoctrinate Czech children and teenagers with National Socialist ideology and encourage loyalty to the German occupation authorities.
While Moravec enjoyed considerable power within the Protectorate government, he became deeply hated by many Czechs, particularly members of the resistance, who regarded him as a symbol of national betrayal.
This documentary explores Emanuel Moravec's extraordinary transformation from a patriotic Czechoslovak officer into one of Hitler's most prominent Czech collaborators, his relationship with Reinhard Heydrich, his role in Nazi propaganda, and the consequences of his loyalty to the Third Reich.
