Forty degrees under a zinc roof, two hundred pairs due Friday — and the soles
won't stick.
In this episode of Igbo Daily Drops, you'll learn 3 phrases for sun, heat and
cold water — and how a young shoemaker in Aba beat the hottest month by
handing his day back to the sun.
Aba's shoemaking cluster beside Ariaria International Market is one of West
Africa's great informal manufacturing hubs, and it was pioneered in the 1950s
by migrants from Mbaise who began by cutting sandals from old car tyres. Almost
every shoemaker there learnt the trade through the Igbo apprenticeship system.
This is intangible cultural heritage and an endangered language, offered in a
spirit of cultural understanding and an African heritage renaissance.
Chimsom, Ebuka and Pa Ndukwe are fictional. The history of Aba's shoe cluster
and its apprenticeship system is documented (Meagher, 2010; 2011).
Research in this episode draws on Kate Meagher, Identity Economics (James
Currey, 2010) — 99% of Aba's shoe producers trained as apprentices, learning
skills, networks, and "occupational values relating to quality and work ethics."
📖 Today's proverb: Onye aghala nwanne ya — Let no one leave their brother
behind.
