Learn Igbo: Days of the Week | Igbo Daily Drops (S3 E176) Week 36

Dela

Her container sails on Friday. Her visa ends on Saturday. On Sunday, her

mother goes into surgery in Enugu. She is in Guangzhou.

In this episode of Igbo Daily Drops, you'll learn 3 phrases that put the

days of the week behind you and ahead of you: Tuzdee, Fraịdee, Sọnde, and

the small markers that tell Igbo whether a day has happened or is still to

come.

Set in the Tianxiu Building in Guangzhou's Xiaobei district, the heart of

the African trading community some call "Chocolate City", the episode

documents two ways of counting Igbo time: the four-day market week (Eke,

Orie, Afọ, Nkwọ) and the seven-day izu ụka, whose Sunday is still Ụbọchị

Ụka, the church day. It is intangible cultural heritage carried in an

endangered language, across the world's busiest trade routes. It is offered

in a spirit of cultural understanding and an African heritage renaissance.

Akụnnaya and her mother are fictional; their world is documented.

Research in this episode draws on Adams Bodomo, University of Hong Kong, 2010

— Guangzhou's African traders act as "linguistic, cultural and economic

bridges" between China and Africa, and Igbo can be heard in the city's shops

and churches.

📖 Today's proverb: O bu ibu anaghị ebu ala — The one who carries a load does

not carry the earth.
