The Russians have invaded Finland.

And now Sweden has to fight.

But the Finnish War of 1808–1809 isn't a simple story of one army overwhelming another. Sweden will retreat, fight back, win battles, lose momentum, and find itself facing an enemy with something Sweden desperately lacks: the ability to keep replacing its losses.

In Part 2 of this four-part series, we enter the war itself.

We follow the Swedish army as it retreats north, while everything depends on one fortress: Sveaborg. Thousands of Swedish soldiers. Hundreds of guns. Supplies. Ammunition. The archipelago fleet.

It is supposed to hold.

It doesn't.

And then, against the odds, Sweden fights back.

For a brief moment, victories at Siikajoki and Pyhäjoki make it possible to believe that Finland might still be saved. The Russians are pushed back, Swedish morale rises, and the war suddenly looks different.

But Russia has reserves.

Sweden doesn't have the same luxury.

And as summer turns toward autumn, the Swedish army is pushed north again.

Then comes Oravais.

One of the largest and bloodiest battles of the Finnish War—and one of Sweden's last real opportunities to change the course of the campaign.

We'll follow the fighting, the counterattacks, the desperate bayonet charges, the shortage of ammunition, and the young Swedish lieutenant whose death would later become part of Swedish literary memory.

But the story doesn't end on the battlefield.

Because when winter comes, the Russian army isn't stopping at Finland.

The Gulf of Bothnia freezes.

And something that had always separated Sweden from Russia suddenly becomes a road.

The war has come home.

And in Stockholm, the question is no longer simply whether Sweden can save Finland.

It's whether Gustav IV Adolf can save his throne.
