What does it feel like to finally stand in a place you've spent years studying?
In this special bonus episode of Beyond the Swedish Postcard, I take you with me to Öland and to one of the places I've been fascinated by for years: Sandby borg.
I've already told you the history of this fifth-century ringfort and the massacre that took place there. We've talked about the archaeology, the victims, the DNA, and the theories surrounding one of Sweden's most haunting archaeological mysteries.
But this time was different.
This time, I was standing inside the walls.
And standing there, I found myself thinking less about the massacre itself and more about something much simpler:
Tomorrow.
The people who lived at Sandby borg didn't know they were living through the final day of their lives. They had food to prepare, animals to tend, families to care for, and plans for the days ahead. Evidence suggests that food had been prepared for a meal that was never finished.
They expected tomorrow.
Tomorrow never came.
And then there is perhaps the most unsettling mystery of all: the dead were never given the kind of burial or mortuary treatment their society would have expected. Why? Why didn't anyone return? Were the survivors too afraid? Was the site considered dangerous? Could the unburied dead have been viewed as restless, spiritually unresolved, or even capable of haunting the living?
We can't know exactly what the people of fifth-century Öland believed. But standing inside those walls, surrounded by the remains of a life that simply stopped, those questions feel very different.
This isn't another history lesson about Sandby borg.
It's a personal journey into what it feels like when history stops being something you've read about...
and becomes a place where you can actually stand.
