A promise is spoken at last—quietly, carefully, and wrapped in falsehood. Even within a lie, hope is allowed to breathe.

In this passage of The Odyssey, Odysseus completes his feigned tale, claiming to have heard certain news of Odysseus alive and rich, seeking counsel at Dodona on how to return home. Betrayed once more and bound for slavery, he escapes by divine favor, slipping into the sea and reaching Ithaca by stealth, preserved by the will of the gods.

This moment matters because truth and deception intertwine—Odysseus plants the idea of return without revealing himself, testing loyalty while placing fate firmly in the hands of the gods.
