Hope is offered—and refused. Even sworn words cannot overcome grief hardened by years of waiting.

In this passage of The Odyssey, Odysseus solemnly swears that he will return within the year and take vengeance on the suitors, binding his promise with an oath before Zeus and the hearth of his own house. Eumaeus listens but cannot believe, turning instead to sorrow for Telemachus and urging the stranger to tell his own story at last.

This moment matters because faith and truth diverge—Odysseus speaks what is real, yet loyalty remains cautious, shaped by loss, fear, and too many false hopes.
