There's a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from loving someone's potential. You keep showing up for who they could be while quietly absorbing who they actually are — and somewhere in there, you start to disappear.

In this episode, we reframe overfunctioning not as a generosity problem or a character flaw, but as a way of keeping hope alive so that grief stays at arm's length.

We explore why grief can feel more dangerous than effort — because effort feels active and hopeful and in our control, while grief feels like giving up. We look at the difference between potential and patterns, and why the more honest question isn't whether someone is capable of meeting a need, but whether they do, consistently, over time, including under stress.

Finally, we talk about what it looks like to stop — to grieve the relationship you hoped for so you can see the one you actually have, to tell the difference between deserving to have a need met and believing you have to earn the right to ask, and to step out of the audition altogether. Because you don't earn love by disappearing. Recognizing what you deserve starts the moment you stop trying to earn it.
