Where did the Indo-European languages come from?Today, nearly half of the world’s population speaks an Indo-European language. English, Spanish, Ukrainian, Persian, Hindi, Greek, German, Russian, and hundreds of other languages ultimately descend from a common prehistoric ancestor: Proto-Indo-European.But who spoke this language? Where was the Indo-European homeland? And how did the descendants of a relatively small prehistoric population spread their languages across much of Europe and Asia?
In this episode, we explore one of the great mysteries of ancient history: the origins of the Proto-Indo-Europeans and the evidence behind the Steppe Hypothesis. We examine how historical linguistics allows scholars to reconstruct Proto-Indo-European vocabulary, what archaeology tells us about the Yamnaya culture and the prehistoric migrations of the Eurasian steppe, and how ancient DNA has transformed the debate over Indo-European origins.
We follow the expansion of steppe-related populations into Europe and Asia through cultures such as Yamnaya, Afanasievo, Corded Ware, Bell Beaker, Sintashta, and Andronovo, and examine their possible connections to the emergence of the Germanic, Celtic, Italic, Balto-Slavic, Tocharian, Greek, Armenian, Indo-Iranian, and Anatolian branches of the Indo-European language family.
We also look at one of the biggest remaining problems for the Steppe Hypothesis: the origins of the Anatolian languages, including Hittite and Luwian, and the surprisingly limited amount of classic Yamnaya-related ancestry found in Bronze Age Anatolia.By combining linguistics, archaeology, and ancient genetics, we can reconstruct a remarkable prehistoric story: the rise of mobile pastoralist societies on the Pontic-Caspian steppe and the migrations that helped reshape the linguistic map of Eurasia.
