Do you have to quit your job, leave your relationship, move, or completely restructure your life in order to heal?
And do you have to change who you are? Do you have to stop being a perfectionist or people pleaser, become more emotional, set boundaries, or make yourself less ambitious?
These are two questions that come up all the time in mind-body healing. And the honest answer to both is: I don’t know.
Sometimes something in your external life does need to change. Other times, the circumstances may not be the primary problem, but the enormous amount of internal pressure your nervous system is experiencing within them. Sometimes, it’s a combination of both.
In this episode, I’m sharing how to explore where your nervous system may be perceiving threat without turning healing into a massive project of trying to identify and fix everything about yourself or your life.
I talk about:
The difference between external sources of threat and the internal experience you’re having within your circumstances
Why quitting the job or leaving the relationship may not resolve the patterns that are creating chronic threat
The one part of healing from neuroplastic symptoms that I believe is non-negotiable
Why reducing the fear of your symptoms may be enough for some people
How perfectionism, people pleasing, self-criticism, emotional suppression, and overriding your needs can create internal pressure
Why these protective patterns aren’t your identity or all of who you are
My experience with “symptom whack-a-mole” and why new symptoms continued to appear
Why digging for the one missing piece can keep you stuck in fear and fix-it mode
How to become a curious observer of the patterns that naturally show up in your daily life
Why healing isn’t about creating perfect circumstances or becoming a different person
How building safety and self-trust gives you more awareness, agency, and choice
