Luke Thomas argues Donald Trump’s Washington, DC National Guard deployment is being sold as a public-safety success, but he argues the evidence and the price tag tell a very different story.
Trump has now moved to extend the controversial National Guard mobilization in Washington through January 2029. But has putting thousands of Guard members in the capital actually made DC safer?
Luke points to a Reuters investigation and local analysis of law-enforcement activity that, in his telling, show little evidence that the deployment has meaningfully reduced violent crime. Instead, many of the most visible enforcement actions involve petty offenses, while murders, robberies, rapes and other serious crimes appear largely unaffected. Meanwhile, DC crime was already declining before the Guard arrived.
The bigger issue is what Washington is getting in exchange for the enormous cost. Luke argues that investing even a fraction of that money into MPD and local resources could produce greater public-safety benefits without normalizing a military presence throughout the nation’s capital.
The conversation also turns to Trump’s broader attempt to remake Washington, from National Guard deployments to expensive park renovations and what Luke calls the “Vegasification” of downtown DC.
