Getting back into dating after a couple of years off the apps stirs up more than you expect. I'm eight weeks into The Summer of George and back in Scottsdale after LA, and this week I'm talking about what it's actually like to date again in midlife: the British guy I met on Hinge, the two dates in LA and one in Vegas, and why the stop in the UK on my way to Greece isn't happening.
I get into why communication has to be the foundation of anything you're building, how slang and sarcasm can land wrong even when nobody means harm, and what I learned about myself getting back in the game after being out of it for a while. The boundaries and expectations I have now are different than they used to be, and voicing them to someone new was a whole different skill.
I also talk about dating without attaching to the outcome, meeting people to actually meet them instead of auditioning them for a role, and why the apps can feel like a numbers game even when you're dealing with real people with real feelings. Then there's the man who recognized my voice from a dating profile, traced it back to the 92 days I spent posting last fall, and asked me to dinner anyway.
And I get into the story your brain writes about a match before you ever meet them, the version you build out of a few photos and a bio, and why they were never going to live up to something they didn't agree to.
