How do you grieve someone who's still alive?

How do you mourn a relationship that existed—but never became what you needed it to be?

Maybe your father is still here, but the relationship you dreamed about never was.

Maybe you're still waiting for the phone call.

The apology.

The acknowledgment.

The “I'm proud of you.”

The explanation.

The moment when he finally understands what his absence, rejection, inconsistency, or actions did to you.

Sis, sometimes you're not grieving the man.

You're grieving the father you needed him to be.

In Episode 96 of Through My Father’s Eyes, we're talking about a type of grief that isn't always recognized: grieving the father-daughter relationship you deserved but never received.

We're talking about releasing the fantasy of who you hoped he would become, accepting what you cannot change, and learning that your healing does not have to wait for his apology, acknowledgment, or transformation.

You can love your father and still tell the truth about what hurt.

You can forgive and still have boundaries.

You can hope he changes without putting your life on hold waiting for it.

And sometimes healing means taking that little girl inside of you by the hand and telling her:

“Baby girl, you don't have to wait here anymore.”

If this episode speaks to you, DM me:

“I'M DONE WAITING.”

You don't have to tell me your entire story. I'll know exactly what you mean.

And share this episode with another woman who may be grieving a father who's still alive.

Sometimes she doesn't need someone telling her to get over it.

She needs someone to remind her:

What you lost was real—even if it was something you never got to have.
