Why do some leaders make people lean in while others struggle to make their message stick?
In this episode of Executive Connect, Melissa Aarskaug sits down with Marcia Layton Turner, award-winning ghostwriter and business strategist, to discuss why storytelling has become one of the most valuable leadership skills in business.
Marcia explains how stories give facts and ideas context, helping executives build trust, communicate vision, strengthen thought leadership, and create a deeper connection with their audience. She shares how she helps authors identify the central message of a book, decide which stories deserve to stay, and turn personal experiences into useful lessons rather than simple self-promotion.
The conversation also examines AI’s growing role in writing, why human experience still matters, and what executives should consider before using AI to create a book. Marcia also explains what a ghostwriter actually does and why the best ones do far more than put words on a page.
Strong leadership is not only about having the right ideas. It is also about telling the stories that help people understand why those ideas matter.

Marcia Layton Turner is an award-winning ghostwriter and business strategist who helps executives, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders transform their knowledge, experiences, and ideas into books that strengthen their authority and influence.
Her connection to writing began early, but she recognized its professional power after her writing helped her gain admission to the University of Michigan MBA program. Later, while working at Kodak, she assisted an executive with a book chapter and eventually discovered that collaborating with leaders to shape their ideas and stories was the work she wanted to pursue.
Today, Marcia works with business leaders to clarify the central message behind their books, develop strong narratives, organize their ideas, and uncover the stories that make their expertise more useful and memorable to readers. She also supports the broader ghostwriting profession through the Association of Ghostwriters.
