What if your company’s biggest untapped investment is not technology, real estate, or another acquisition—but the people already inside the business?

In this episode of Executive Connect, Melissa Aarskaug sits down with Dr. Cynthia Bentzen-Mercer, USA Today bestselling author, executive coach, and longtime human resources leader, to rethink how organizations hire, develop, and invest in talent.

Cynthia challenges the traditional view of employees as a labor cost and introduces a different approach: treat human capital like an appreciating investment portfolio. She explains why outdated hiring filters can cause companies to miss high-potential talent, how natural ability can matter more than a perfect résumé, and why finance and people strategy should never operate separately.

The conversation also covers Cynthia’s human capital portfolio model, the value of workforce diversification, career ownership, high-potential talent, and the uniquely human skills that become even more important as AI changes how work gets done.

For leaders preparing for the future, the message is clear: your business strategy is only as strong as the people capable of executing it.
