For as long as there have been people, we have tried to reach the ones we have lost. We light candles. We speak into empty rooms. We ask for a sign. Somewhere along the way, we were told we could speak to our loved ones in spirit, but never listen for an answer.
This episode is about that silence.
I begin in a sea of cemetery candlelight in the country I come from and take you into the ancient Polish rite of Dziady (Forefathers’ Eve), where the living once welcomed, fed and honoured those who had passed. From there, we meet the Guślarz, the village doorkeeper who opened the way between worlds long before the word medium existed.
Together we explore the history of mediumship, ancestor traditions, grief, ritual, faith, and the relationship between the living and those who continue in spirit. We look at how these traditions were gradually transformed, why the Catholic Church drew a line between speaking to the departed and listening for an answer, and ask a question that has echoed through history:
Why was the instinct to stay close to those we love honoured for thousands of years… and then forbidden? Who decided they must stay silent?
