Cam had a Golden Ticket. He could have picked anything. He chose Blank Check.
This week on Gen Wars, Nick, Stephen, Cam, and Katherine revisit Disney’s 1994 family comedy Blank Check, directed by Rupert Wainwright and starring Brian Bonsall, Karen Duffy, Miguel Ferrer, Tone Loc, James Rebhorn, and Rick Ducommun.
The premise is pure 90s-kid wish fulfillment: 11-year-old Preston Waters gets his hands on a signed blank check, writes it for $1 million, cashes it, invents a mysterious millionaire named Macintosh, buys a mansion, hires a limo driver, and starts living every kid’s dream while criminals and the FBI try to figure out where the money went.
Unfortunately, once four adults start examining this movie, the wheels come off almost immediately.
How does an 11-year-old understand closing costs? How does he buy a house in six days? How heavy would $1 million actually be? Where the hell did the movie’s $13 million budget go? Why are Preston’s parents completely fine with any of this?
And then we reach the fountain scene.
At that point, Gen X vs. Millennials is officially canceled. Everyone has united against the movie.
Stephen demands arrests. Katherine questions every adult involved. Nick tries desperately to apply logic to Blank Check. And Cam sits back enjoying the chaos because this was his plan from the beginning.
Is Blank Check still a harmless piece of 1990s Disney nostalgia, or is this one childhood favorite that should remain safely locked inside the Disney Vault?
Cash the check and join the chaos.
