Duct tape originated during World War II when ordnance worker Vesta Strout designed a durable, waterproof cloth-backed adhesive tape to keep moisture out of ammunition cases. It was originally manufactured using cotton duck fabric, which inspired its early nickname "duck tape." The material was later rebranded as silver "duct tape" during the 1950s housing boom to market it for home repairs. Built from a composite structure featuring a polyethylene top coat, a woven fabric mesh scrim for tensile strength, and a rubber-based pressure-sensitive adhesive, duct tape provides an airtight, flexible seal capable of adhering firmly to diverse surfaces without heat or water activation.

Beyond common household repairs, duct tape has played a critical role in aerospace history, notably helping construct emergency carbon dioxide scrubbers aboard Apollo 13 and repairing damaged rover fenders during the Apollo 17 lunar mission. In dermatology, duct tape occlusion therapy serves as an effective clinical treatment for removing common warts through localized immune stimulation and oxygen deprivation. However, despite its modern moniker, research from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory demonstrates that standard cloth-backed duct tape fails quickly under thermal cycling and is unsuitable for sealing HVAC heating and ventilation ducts, which instead require specialized foil tapes or mastic sealants.
