Somewhere in northern England, a serving girl is watching through a keyhole.

She sees a stranger pull something dark and withered from a sack. She sees him set it upright on the table like a candlestick. She sees the fingers begin to burn.

One. Two. Three. Four.

The thumb stays dark.

Because she’s the only one still awake.

In this episode, we trace the Hand of Glory — the dried and pickled hand of a hanged man, believed for centuries to lock every sleeping person in a house into a sleep so deep that no one could wake them.

And then we visit the one that survived.

Because there is a real hand, in a real museum, on the Yorkshire coast of England.

Nobody knows whose it is. Nobody knows what it was meant to do.
