This week: the places America poisoned and then tried to forget. A neighborhood built on 21,000 tons of chemical waste, sold to a school district for one dollar. A town that's been on fire underground since 1962. A military base where up to a million people drank contaminated water for decades while a Marine's nine-year-old daughter died of leukemia and nobody told him why.

Seven sites. Sixty years. The same pattern every time: the people closest to the danger had the least power to stop it, and accountability came late, if it came at all.

 

The ground beneath us is not neutral.
