Being the bigger person can sound like good advice. But what happens when owning your part quietly turns into carrying the entire relationship?
Sometimes reaching out first, apologizing, or letting something go really is the right thing to do. But lately, I’ve been wondering when compassion started meaning one person was responsible for repairing every rupture and keeping the connection alive.
Some of us slowly become the person who reassures, forgives, smooths things over, and asks what we could have done differently. No one officially gives us that role. It just becomes familiar.
Until one day, you realize you’re exhausted.
And you’re not sure when it became your job.
This isn’t about cutting people off or refusing to take responsibility. It’s about the difference between compassion and responsibility, and whether both people are willing to carry their own part.
If you’ve spent years being the first to reach out or quietly holding relationships together, I hope you’ll sit with me for a while.
