I used to think I knew myself. I knew everyone's schedules, what everybody needed, and how to keep the peace. But somewhere along the way, I realized something uncomfortable.
I wasn't really sure I knew myself anymore.
Not because I had disappeared. Because I'd spent so many years paying attention to everyone else that I quietly stopped paying attention to myself.
This isn't really a conversation about motherhood. Or marriage. Or getting older. It's about what can happen when we spend years becoming the person everyone else depends on. It rarely happens all at once. It happens one ordinary choice at a time.
Putting someone else's preference first. Keeping the peace. Being the reliable one. Making sure everyone else is okay.
Until one day someone asks, "What do you want?" ...and you honestly aren't sure.
If you've ever felt disconnected from yourself, struggled to answer simple questions about what you want, or realized you've spent far more time understanding everyone else than understanding yourself, I hope you'll sit with me for a while.
