"A Christmas Gift" is a Christmas poem in which little Dottie writes to Santa requesting a beautiful Paris doll. Santa faithfully delivers it on Christmas morning, placing it among the decorated tree and filled stockings. But when Dot's battered, broken-backed dolls creep out from the shadows, they greet the newcomer not with welcome, but with mocking whispers — because they know a secret about what else arrived that very morning that changes everything.
