What if the goal of health isn’t to eliminate stress... but to become capable of responding to the right kinds of stress well?
Modern wellness culture is intensely focused on lowering cortisol, regulating the nervous system, maximizing recovery, & avoiding added strain. Sometimes that is exactly what health requires.
But somewhere along the way, “chronic stress can make us sick” became “stress itself is bad.”
Exercise is stress. Fasting is stress. Heat & cold are stress. Hunger is uncomfortable.
In this episode of The Orthodox Health Podcast, Dr. Michael Christian & John ask what separates adaptive stress from destructive stress.
We explore cortisol, homeostasis, allostasis, inflammation, oxidative stress, hormesis, recovery, capacity, control, meaning, nervous-system regulation, fasting, voluntary hardship, & why Christian asceticism cannot be reduced to an ancient biohacking protocol.
The deeper question is: What am I enslaved to?
Because the point of asceticism is not becoming the person who can suffer the most. It is becoming free enough to love.
What stress do I need to remove? What stress do I need to recover from? What stress do I need to stop avoiding?
Next week: Dr. Pete Patitsas, author of The Athos Diet, on traditional Athonite eating & the limits of reducing asceticism to a health intervention.
