When does honorable sacrifice become a cage?
A man works long hours to provide for his family. He pays the bills, keeps his commitments, & does what needs to be done. But what happens when the people he's providing for receive only what's left of him?
In this episode of the Orthodox Health Podcast, Fr. Michael Butler returns to help Dr. Mike & John examine one of the most difficult questions facing Christian men: How do we distinguish a cross we're called to carry from a way of life that is slowly consuming us?
Beginning with an unlikely comparison between captive lions & modern office workers, the conversation explores the purpose of work, the dignity of the human person, spiritual freedom, monastic obedience, acedia, & the difference between sacrifice & tribute.
Fr. Michael also shares his experience as a priest, husband, father, & provider, including the sacrifices his own family made over three decades of ministry.
Along the way, we confront Christian burnout, the temptation to abandon difficult responsibilities, the temptation to endure out of fear, and the importance of freely choosing what we're working toward.
The conversation ultimately reaches the Orthodox understanding of synergy, the example of Christ in Gethsemane, reconciliation with our fathers, & a powerful definition of mature masculinity: the gladful assumption of sacrificial responsibility.
