The Year Without a Summer: Mount Tambora, Frankenstein, and the Summer That Never Came

In 1816, snow fell in June, crops failed across Europe and North America, and thousands feared the end of the world. Known as the Year Without a Summer, this extraordinary period was caused by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Tambora a year earlier, although nobody at the time knew the true reason. As famine spread and old superstitions resurfaced, a group of writers trapped by the relentless storms at Lake Geneva created Frankenstein and The Vampyre, changing horror literature forever.
